Carmack: 3DS and NGP may be the last “specialized handheld game consoles ever built”

John Carmack is of the opinion that Nintendo’s 3DS and Sony’s NGP could be “the last generation of specialized handheld game consoles ever built.”

Speaking with The Dallas Morning News, the id Software wizard believes the new handhelds will be the last of their kind due to the insurgence of the smartphone and tablet market.

“The smart phone may turn out to be 80 percent as good at gaming as a dedicated gaming platform,” he said. “People are going to carry their smart phone, and if it’s an 80 percent gaming device, how many people in the gaming market will be satisfied with that? One of the things that we’ve seen is the type of games that people play on the smart phones, at the moment, tend to be pretty casual games.

“If that’s what the consumers are going to trend towards on there, there may not be much as developers we can do about that. You don’t always get to build pyramids just because you want to.”

Carmack added that some developers are a bit reluctant at the moment to consider smart phones and tablets as gaming devices, because consumers are still willing to fork over $40 or $50 for a DS or PSP title. These same consumers, Carmack believes, are still a bit shy when it comes to spending money on a downloadable game on their smart phone or tablet, no matter how inexpensive.

The two new legendery pokemons,it's going to be difficult to  win those two,so start reading walkthroughs...if you can read Japanese ;)

Pokemon Black and White are coming next month and we are all very excited about it!
Pokemon Black & Pokemon White are the first games of the long anticipated fifth generation of Pokιmon. These games have been released in Japan in September 18th 2010 and are said to bring the revolution to the Pokemon Series.

These games are set to feature the previously established assortment of Pokemon, but will also contain a massive amount, 156 in fact, of brand New Pokemon. These Pokemon are the only ones you will encounter until the main game has been completed

In addition to that, Pokemon Black and Pokιmon White take the 3D attributes previously included in Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver and take them to new levels by including things like fully 3D bridges and a completely 3D city.

Pokιmon Black & White are set in the region known as Unova. Unova is a region far away from the previous regions, requiring you to get there by Boat or Plane. It has a large city called Castelia City, with loads of buildings and sky scrapes for you to explore. Outside of the city and Unova remains to be predominantly industrialised with various factories and train tracks existing in the various areas. As the games are set in a region far away, the main game will not feature any old Pokιmon until you have beaten the main story. The games also have you playing as protagonists older than the previous playable characters.

Pokιmon Black & Pokemon White are to be compatible in with the games of the previous generation; Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver through the aspect of the game known as the PokeShifter so you can complete the Pokedex.

  • NA March 6, 2011
  • AUS March 10, 2011
